Sorenson Genomics Relocates its Identigene Division From Houston, Texas to Expanded, State-of-the-Art DNA Laboratory in Salt Lake City

Sorenson Genomics grows in response to sharp increase in demand for retail consumer DNA testing and forensic DNA casework. All Identigene's forensic, paternity and family relatedness DNA testing will now be performed at Sorensen Genomics' advanced, highly automated facility that has recently upgraded its capacity five-fold.

SALT LAKE CITY (April 28, 2008) — Sorenson Genomics, a leading global provider of DNA testing services, today announced the relocation of its Identigene DNA testing division from Houston, Texas to the company’s recently expanded, state-of-the-art genetics laboratory in Salt Lake City in order to keep pace with fast-growing demand for DNA testing.

Sorenson Genomics’ Salt Lake City laboratory recently increased its workforce by 25 percent and invested millions of dollars in advanced equipment, boosting its DNA testing capacity five-fold. The facility is one of the first genetics laboratories to fully automate its paternity testing process, and is among the world’s most highly accredited DNA testing laboratories.

Identigene’s consumer market was expanded significantly on March 25, 2008, when Sorenson Genomics announced its nationwide rollout of the Identigene DNA Paternity Test Kit for sale over-the-counter at Rite Aid drug stores. It is the first DNA test kit ever sold through major retail stores and is a completely new marketing channel for DNA testing. Sorenson Genomics’ advanced technology and increased efficiency allows customers to receive DNA test results days after they submit their samples rather than weeks or months.

“Bringing Identigene into our expanded facility is an important development,” said Doug Fogg, COO of Sorenson Genomics. “This produces a powerful synergy of expertise that increases our competitive advantage and provides our growing clientele with the highest quality service available.”

Paternity and family relatedness DNA testing will continue to be done under the name of Sorenson Genomics' Identigene business unit, while forensic DNA casework for Identigene’s current clientele will now be done under the Sorenson Forensics name. Identigene’s core forensic scientific team will merge into the Sorenson Forensics business unit, already located in the Salt Lake City laboratory. The forensics DNA testing industry is rapidly increasing through greater demand by law enforcement agencies and private industry.

“Identigene and Sorenson Forensics have two of the most experienced and respected forensic DNA teams in the U.S.,” said Tim Kupferschmid, executive director of the forensic laboratory. “Our own customers — and the DNA forensics market generally — will greatly benefit from this consolidation.” Kupferschmid is the former forensics technical director at Myriad Genetics and the former director of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory. He has 18 years in the forensic DNA industry.

Identigene’s Houston laboratory will be closed and a portion of Identigene’s workforce will be employed at the Salt Lake City laboratory.
