Sorenson Genomics Quintuples Laboratory Capacity to Fulfill Rising Demand for DNA Testing Services
Leading Human Identity and Relatedness Testing Company Will Add Personnel, Expand Facilities to Accelerate Volume of Testing in All Company Divisions and Practices, Led by Growth in Strategic Partnerships with Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation and The Generations Network
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (September 10, 2007) — Sorenson Genomics, a leading global provider of DNA-related testing services, today announced that it is expanding its facilities to increase capacity five-fold in order to meet sharply increasing demand for the company's industry-leading testing services.
Sorenson Genomics is currently comprised of four primary operating divisions: GeneTree, a pioneer in on-line paternity testing services; IDENTIGENE, the first DNA testing company to be accredited for use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for human genetic identity testing; Sorenson Forensics, which provides advanced forensic casework services to assist law enforcement and other government and industry clients in solving difficult forensic cases; and Sorenson Genomics, which provides a variety of DNA testing services to resellers in more than 70 countries throughout the world.
"We are currently experiencing a sharp increase in demand for all of our business units," said Doug Fogg, chief operating officer for Sorenson Genomics. "To meet these increasing demands, we are in the process of significantly growing our workforce and are investing millions of dollars to improve the efficiency of our laboratory operations, including the expansion of our facilities."
Fogg added that much of the increased demand for Sorenson Genomics testing services comes from major strategic partnerships. One ongoing partnership is with the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF), which is building the world's largest repository of correlated genetic and genealogical information, now comprising more than 5 million records. In summer 2007, Sorenson Genomics entered an agreement to perform all genetic testing services for The Generations Network, the world's leading online family history and genealogy site. Sorenson Genomics is also the official testing laboratory for African Ancestry, which co-produced the acclaimed African American Lives PBS television series that has traced the ancestries of such American icons as Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee and Quincy Jones.
The Sorenson Genomics laboratory expansion will result in a five-fold increase in testing capacity, and a 25-percent increase in the company's workforce, with a focus on scientists and laboratory technicians.
In addition, the company is adding newly advanced equipment and expanding what is widely considered one of the world's most rigorous and highly-accredited genetic laboratories. Sorenson Genomics is the first laboratory to have recently introduced a fully automated paternity testing process using the latest 3730 capillary electrophoresis equipment from Applied Biosystems. Sorenson Genomics was the world's first laboratory accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) for parentage and familial relationship testing services, and is certified by the Forensic Quality Service International (FQS-I) to ISO 17025 for all of its testing products and services. Sorenson Genomics was also the only private US laboratory invited to assist in the identification of victims in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.
Sorenson Genomics' expanded capacity is also part of a major growth trend for the Utah life science industry. "It is exciting to be able to contribute to an exciting period of growth and development for the life science sector in Utah," said Fogg. "This dynamic environment provides us with a tremendous amount of talent coming out of the state's research institutions and in the industry statewide and nationally, as Utah is seen as an increasingly desirable place to live and work."
