Sorenson Genomics Expands with Acquisition of Identigene's Advanced DNA Testing Services
Sorenson Genomics Will Bring Identigene Under its Organizational Umbrella Alongside Sorenson Forensics, GeneTree and Relative Genetics. Identigene, a Provider of Forensic and Paternity DNA Testing Services Since 1993, Will Keep its Name and Remain in Houston But Will Have Access to More Investment in Technology and Expertise.
SALT LAKE CITY, UT and HOUSTON, TX (June 11, 2007) — Sorenson Genomics, a leading global provider of DNA testing services based in Salt Lake City, Utah, announced today it has acquired Identigene of Houston, Texas. Founded in 1993, Identigene was the first laboratory to perform commercial paternity testing and has provided forensic DNA casework and relatedness DNA testing services for 200,000 clients throughout the world. Identigene will retain its name and remain in its Houston facilities. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
"Sorenson Genomics and Identigene are both nationally recognized DNA laboratories," said Douglas Fogg, COO of Sorenson Genomics. "By merging our two premier companies, both the forensics and the relatedness DNA testing industries will benefit from the combined expertise in services and laboratory processes."
Identigene primarily serves two DNA-testing market segments. The first is forensics, which is mostly criminal casework for public crime laboratories, law enforcement agencies and defense attorneys. The second is relatedness testing, which involves assessing paternity and other immediate family relationships. Sorenson Genomics currently serves those two markets as well as the genetic genealogy and ancestry markets, through its Relative Genetics product line.
Sorenson Genomics' Sorenson Forensics division and Identigene have two of the most experienced forensic DNA teams in the country, employing lab directors and core team members with decades of experience completing DNA casework used in public crime laboratories and law enforcement agencies and by defense attorneys across the U.S. Fogg said both Identigene and Sorenson Forensics will employ Sorenson Genomics' innovative Collaborative Forensics™ procedures, which use the most advanced DNA technologies and laboratory techniques and customize services to the requirements of a diverse clientele.
Sorenson Genomics' GeneTree division and Identigene have more than 20 years of combined experience in relatedness DNA testing. Identigene pioneered today's leading technology for human identification used in forensics and relatedness DNA testing, a method called STR (Short Tandem Repeat) analysis. GeneTree is a pioneer in providing direct-to-consumer DNA testing services via the Internet. Sorenson Forensics has FQS ISO 17025 accreditation for forensics, while Identigene's forensics accreditation is ASCLD/LAB ISO 17025.
Combined, the companies will create one of the largest players in the human identification and relatedness DNA testing services industry and will offer consumers the most reliable and timely analysis available for the widest range of legal and at-home DNA testing services.
