Newspaper Story Inspires Medical Device Inventor and Philanthropist James LeVoy Sorenson to Make Matching Grant
Local Philanthropist's Donation Will Allow Cancer Wellness House to Transform its Garage into ÔChildren's Cottage,' a Resource for Offspring of Cancer Victims
SALT LAKE CITY (August 24, 2006) — Biotechnology pioneer and philanthropist James LeVoy Sorenson read a small story in a local newspaper on Sunday that inspired him to make a large donation.
Sunday's newspaper ran an article on the "Survivors at the Summit 2006" benefit for the Cancer Wellness House held the previous day, which included a fund-raising walk up Snowbird's Hidden Peak. The charity event raised $40,000 for the local nonprofit organization that provides free resources to those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
After reading the story, Sorenson contacted Cancer Wellness House executive director Jill Angerbauer and pledged to give the organization $40,000 to match what they had raised on Saturday.
"We are thrilled with Mr. Sorenson's generous contribution," said Angerbauer. "It will allow us to finish our Children's Cottage this fall. We have had plans to renovate our garage into a warm and welcoming place for children of cancer victims, many of whose parents are terminally ill. Now we'll have the resources to line up contractors and volunteers to install heating and cooling, sheetrock and to do a nice job of decorating it."
Cancer Wellness House, the only program of its kind in the Intermountain West, offers a wide variety of services and programs that support individuals and their families in their quest for cancer recovery. In 2005 the Cancer Wellness House won the "Cancer Facility of the Year" award from the Utah Department of Health.
"I'm pleased to contribute to such a great cause. My heart goes out to everyone touched by cancer, and I salute the newspaper for running these inspiring stories that prove how deeply we care about each other," said Sorenson.
The Cancer Wellness House is located at 59 South 1100 East in Salt Lake City, Utah.
